1987 Ringmaster John S. Kartovsky  

March 24, 1928 – June 14, 2012

John S. Kartovsky, Jr. predeceased by parents John Sr. and May Collins Kartovsky, brothers Peter and William Kartovsky, James Collins and sister Ellen Collins Staneck, passed away in Boca Raton, Florida on June 14, 2012 at the age of 84. He is survived by nephews Joseph Staneck, James Staneck and nieces, Patricia Staneck Hammett, Jill Collins, Joy Collins, Jo-Anne Collins Lapko, Joyce Kartovsky Toigo, Janet Kartovsky Discenza, dear friend Juan Jaramillo, and many cousins, grand nieces and grand nephews. A graduate of Fairfield College Preparatory School (1946) and Holy Cross College (1950) he served in the US Army for 2 years followed by 10 years of civilian government service in Germany, France and Washington DC. A long time resident of Bridgeport, CT, his business, civic and social activities included service as president and chairman of the board of West End Moving Co; membership on the Board of Trustees of Goodspeed Opera House, the Rotary and the Algonquin and Brooklawn Country Clubs. He proudly led the Barnum festival of Bridgeport as the 1987 Ringmaster. John possessed an extraordinary zest for life, travel, music, theatre and for people. He was treasured by his many friends across the globe. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 25, from 4-7 PM at Larson Funeral Home (2496 North Ave. Bridgeport, CT). Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, June 26, at 10 AM at the Cathedral of St. Augustine in Bridgeport, CT, followed by interment at Mountain Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fairfield College Preparatory School of Fairfield CT, the Barnum Festival Society of Bridgeport CT, or the Goodspeed Opera House of East Haddam, CT.

In 1948, so that Barnum’s “kind acts may live forever,” Steinkraus and community leaders established the Barnum Festival, saluting Barnum and the people and events that made him the greatest showman on earth.
