Under the leadership of the 1996 Ringmaster Michael C. Bisciglia, Rosa J. Correa and Ana L. Garcia, inspired by Puerto Rico’s national dance, founded La Danza as a charter event of the Barnum Festival. The celebration of La Danza in Bridgeport coincides with the May 16th celebration of the Week of La Danza in Puerto Rico.

For eleven consecutive years, the Barnum Festival La Danza celebrates the Puerto Rican Danza as it promotes the cultural diversity of Latin American by an annual salute to a different country. Puerto Rico as the host has woven a unifying tapestry by paying tribute to Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Columbia, Peru, Venezuela, El Salvador and Espana. This year La Danza is dedicated to Argentina.
La Danza, a style of music that generations of Hispanic Americans have embraced since the early nineteenth century, has been kept alive to celebrate and carry on the tradition for our contemporaries and for future generations. La Danza celebration helps to highlight the contributions and talent of Hispanics in Fairfield County and beyond. Just as this beautiful musical style gained in depth, richness and expression, the spirit of La Danza is revived through this celebration.

La Danza has a two pronged purpose: celebrate and promote the culture, heritage and history of the Americas at a gala on the second Friday of May and promote student participation and study in the performing arts by granting annual scholarships through the Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation.
The Southern Connecticut Gas Company and WCUM 1450 Radio Cumbre were the corporate sponsors for this inaugural event. In 1997, JP Morgan Chase Bank joined the rank of sponsor.
Barbara Bodine and Elizabeth Pfriem are committed supporters of the Scholarship Fund. We also count among our partners several businesses that support La Danza.
